Life is just a bowl of soup -
Hot or cold, here's the best
the area has to offer
Is it winter, spring or summer? Hard to tell. The trees are blossoming, but the wind is blowing pink and white petals all over the streets. It reached 85 last Saturday, while the mornings and evenings this week were downright chilly. So it's difficult to take a stand on a column about great soups in area restaurants - mostly because they're served hot as traditional winter comfort food.

* Jamie's Broadway Grille (427 Broadway, 916-442-4044):
We taste clam chowder whenever the opportunity arises, but we've yet to see one top Jamie Brunnell's version (though the bowl at the Swan Oyster Depot in San Francisco comes close).
Consider: ocean clams, clam broth, salt pork, vermouth, Dry Sack sherry, carrots, onions, celery, bay leaf, diced Yukon gold potatoes, black pepper and "a house mixture of spices." His customers go through 15 gallons of it each week.
